Focus on “Bilingual”
Bilingual subject teaching in English/German – a special feature of our school.
What is bilingual education?
In bilingual subject teaching, a subject such as geography or history is taught in both the student's native language and a foreign language. English serves as the working language, enabling students to explore and discuss subject matter. While linguistic assessment takes a back seat, the language development is nonetheless significant.
This is how the bilingual train is structured.
- Grades 5 (second semester) and 6: two-hour preparatory course to expand English language skills
- Grades 7 and 8: Bilingual Geography
- Grades 9 and 10: History (bilingual)
- Upper secondary level: three-hour basic course “Civics bilingual” (Geography, History, Social Studies) – entirely in English
From grade 7 onwards, lessons are taught for three hours a week, usually two hours in English and one in German. An oral exam in the foreign language is possible as part of the Abitur (university entrance qualification); a certificate confirms participation.
